Love takes root in Ipswich this Mother’s Day

02 May 2025

Celebrate Mother’s Day by planting a tree in honour of the special women in your life at a free community planting event on Sunday, 11 May 2025.

The annual Trees for Mum event brings the community together to improve waterways, discover local flora and fauna, and enjoy a day in nature.

Ipswich City Council Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Jim Madden said the event is a beloved Ipswich tradition, with many thousands of native plants installed since its inception in 2013.

“Each year we have families eager to join this event that improves Ipswich’s natural environment by helping to restore an urban creek bank,” Cr Madden said.

“This year the event will be held at Jack Barkley Park, North Booval and participants will help create native habitat along the ecologically important Bundamba Creek.

“Every tree planted helps improve and preserve the health of the local environment and waterways and will grow to provide habitat and shelter for wildlife.”

Cr Madden said every mother or carer registered for Trees for Mum would receive a complimentary gift and treat to enjoy at the planting event.

“This special day honouring mums has lasting positive impacts, with planted trees making a difference to the environment long after the event is done,” Cr Madden said.

“The event will help create an environmental legacy for future generations, by improving water quality, increasing native habitat, reducing bank erosion and restoring urban vegetation.”

This project is funded by the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program, with the support of Ipswich City Council.

Jack Barkley Park is one of nine priority sites for restoration under the four-year project, which is set to rehabilitate approximately 14,000 square metres of riparian corridor throughout Ipswich.
