A date has been claimed for the Ipswich Show Public Holiday in 2026.
Council voted at its ordinary council meeting on Wednesday 30 July to accept a recommendation from the Ipswich Show Society to pursue the gazettal of the public holiday on Friday 15 May 2026.
Economic and Cultural Development Committee Chairperson Councillor Pye Augustine said council will now make an application to the State Government’s Office of Industrial Relations to formalise the public holiday.
“The Ipswich Show is a quintessential part of our region’s identity and a highlight in Ipswich’s packed events calendar, attracting more than 30,000 people annually,” Cr Augustine said.
“Since moving the show holiday to a Friday in 2011, our community and businesses eagerly await the long weekend every year.
“Council will now write to the State Government to seek to formalise the public holiday date and allow planning to begin.”
The Ipswich show has excited, entertained and informed the community since its first iteration in 1873 – this year celebrating its 152nd anniversary.
The Ipswich Show Society is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes and encourages pastoral, agricultural, horticultural and industrial activities in the Ipswich region.
