The Queens Park Environmental Education Centre is next to the Queens Park Cafe in the centre of the city's premier parkland. The Centre has many environmental education exhibits which showcase Ipswich's unique natural environment, waterways and sustainability themes. The interactive displays connect you with nature in your home and around the city.
There is also an extensive array of information about Council's initiatives, including:
Nestled among the prominent fig trees, the building itself is a great example to residents of environmental design features. Passive solar design and energy efficient measures make the most of natural lighting. Insulation, large overhangs and wide verandas provide protection from the western sun, reducing the reliance on air conditioning. The elevated structure allows for natural airflow and free water movement across the site.
The Environment Education Centre is a space that can be enjoyed by all ages, with plenty of hands-on opportunities to connect with and learn about Ipswich's natural environment. Admission is free.
In 2023 schools and large groups will be able to book visits to the Environmental Education Centre on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
At the centre schools will experience a short presentation by a council officer, followed by time to explore the play-based learning experiences. If classes are interested in a specific focus area, tailored programs can be arranged.
Schools and other large groups are requested to pre-book their visit to the Nature Centre and/or Environmental Education Centre at least one month in advance by emailing enviroed@ipswich.qld.gov.au. A recommended program for exploring the park will be provided customised to your group size.
Every Friday during school term the youngest members of our community and their grown-ups are invited to share in story time and an environmentally themed activity. Designed for children aged 5 and under, please drop by between 9.30am-11.30am to join in.
