New large item kerbside collection program open for bookings

29 January 2024

Ipswich residents can now access a cleaner, greener large item kerbside collection program, with bookings for the new free, annual bagged service open from 9am tomorrow (Monday 29 January).

Growth, Infrastructure and Waste Committee Chair Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the free kerbside collection service would now be available every year, instead of every second year.

“The on-demand service offers every eligible Ipswich household one free collection each year, and is specifically designed to increase the amount of reclaimed materials by more than 50 percent,” Mayor Harding said.

“This new scheme is safer, cleaner, and shifts our focus from waste disposal to resource recovery – a key priority for Ipswich City Council.

“From Monday 29 January, residents can simply go online or call directly to book a large two cubic metre bag on the date of their choice.

“Our contractor Handel Group will deliver the bag straight to the property and then collect it once notified by the householder, within a specified timeframe.

“This is a significant move away from unsightly, dangerous piles of waste left out on our kerbsides, and I’m proud that our city is moving further away from old waste practices to environmentally friendly, economical recycling practices.”

Growth, Infrastructure and Waste Committee Deputy Chairperson Councillor Paul Tully said the on-demand service sees another key pillar of council’s comprehensive Resource Recovery Strategy 2021 accomplished.

“Under the previous biennial model, all collected materials went straight to landfill – an immense waste and not in keeping with council’s progressive efforts to overhaul our waste and resource recovery strategies,” Cr Tully said.

“These new bags will be available for residents to book at Ipswich.qld.gov.au/kerbside or by calling the customer service centre on 07 3130 0412.

“This is an exciting change for Ipswich residents that will help keep our city clean and resource smart well into the future.”

The amount and types of waste currently accepted will remain the same with the new collection service.
