Plan ahead for smoother visit to Riverview Resource Recovery Centre

04 June 2025

Ipswich residents are being urged to think ahead if planning a trip to Riverview Resource Recovery Centre in the coming months as essential repairs to the centre’s transfer pit are undertaken.

Ipswich City Council Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Jim Madden said the current transfer pit, which has been in use for about 40 years, needed essential remediation works to extend its life.

“Ipswich City Council engaged a structural engineer to undertake a detailed inspection of the transfer pit in April 2024,” Cr Madden said.

“This inspection identified repairs necessary to extend the life of the pit wall and ramp area of the transfer pit for the next 20 years.

“The Riverview Transfer Station building was built in the late 1980s. The operating environment is harsh, with heavy machinery operating daily in the pit.

“In the interests of the safety of community members who visit the facility and council’s own resource recovery centre employees, and to prolong the life of this important community asset, it is essential these works be undertaken.

“If we don’t undertake these works to improve the transfer pit now, the safety risks and eventual costs to the community down the road will be far greater.”

Cr Madden said council has taken several steps to minimise the impact of the works but visitors to the centre should expect some disruptions.

“Careful planning has gone into the delivery of these works which have been scheduled across an eight-week period during the quietest time of the year at the centre,” Cr Madden said.

“However, we know any time major works are undertaken at a key community facility that there will be disruptions. A partial closure of the pit to allow for these works is necessary and there will be impacts on residents visiting the centre.

“To help minimise the impact, council has arranged for additional traffic control, night works to get the job done as quickly as possible and changes to onsite operations to open up extra waste drop-off zones.”

Cr Madden said there are a number of things residents can do to help during the works, including:

  • Delay visits to the Riverview centre if not urgent
  • Visit the Riverview centre at non-peak times if possible
  • Consider using Rosewood Resource Recovery Centre – it will be at full operating capacity
  • Sort your load for easy drop off of recycling items to make your journey once inside the centre smoother.

“I want to thank the community in advance for its support and patience while these necessary works are undertaken,” Cr Madden said.

“I would also encourage anyone visiting the centre to remember that council staff are working for the community and ask that you please treat them with dignity and respect.”

The transfer pit works are expected to start on 16 June until late August.
