What is the right to information?
The right to information is a legal right to access government-held information. The Right to Information Act 2009 (Qld) promotes openness, accountability, and transparency by requiring governments to make more information publicly available and easily accessible to all. It also provides for individuals to protect their privacy by reviewing their personal information, and if required requesting amendments.
Ipswich City Council is committed to making information available whenever possible, helping residents stay informed about decisions that affect them, and to ensure that their personal information is accurate.
There are many ways you can access information held by Council. Before starting the RTI Application process, check to see if the information is already available through one of the below methods

Disclosure log
A record of previous right to information requests, and documents released under the Right to Information Act 2009 (Qld). This log does not include requests of a personal interest.
You may find the information you need has previously been requested and can be provided to you without the need to submit an RTI access application .
Development.i
Information relating to development applications and basic property information for the Ipswich City Council Local Government Area.
Property and Rates Searches
The Property and Rates Search is an on-line service for requesting Property Certificates for all land within the Ipswich City Council region.
Transparency Hub
The Hub is an online platform that provides the community with unprecedented access to Council’s finances, so you can see how ratepayers’ money is being spent and why.
Administrative access
Provides the public with the opportunity to access information through less formal channels than through the legislated Right to Information access application process . Information released administratively is considered non-sensitive material.
Examples of documents which may be released to you via administrative access include copies of your rates notice, requests submitted to Council that only involve yourself eg: missed bin requests, copies of correspondence previously provided to you.
RTI access application
If the information you are looking for cannot be located through one of the other options , you have the right to request access to information in our possession or control. The information requested can relate to the business of council, or your personal information.
An access request under the Right to Information Act 2009 (Qld) may attract fees and charges. This information, together with instructions on how to make your request is provided [link?]
Note: From 1 July 2025, Information Privacy Applications are managed under the Right to Information Act 2009 (Qld). There are no changes to fees or charges because of this change. Applications made prior to this date will not be affected by the legislative changes.
