Parking
Council has a number of controls regarding parking, which it regulates through State Legislation and its local laws. These controls are aimed at improving safety and convenience for our community and for visitors to Ipswich City through improved traffic management.
The Transport Operations Road Use Management Act 1999 - Road Rules (TORUM) and Local Law 27 (Regulated Parking) includes specific restrictions for the parking of vehicles, such as signposted 'no stopping zones' and time-restricted parking.
Parking near Footpaths, Driveways, Intersections or Bus Stops
Parking a vehicle on a path, dividing strip or nature strip is not permitted as this causes danger to pedestrians and other motorists, as well as potentially causing damage to the footpath and infrastructure.
When you are parking make sure that you:
- don't park on footpaths or footpath ramps
- don't park or partly block across driveways or footpaths
Unless otherwise signed, these rules apply at intersections and bus stops:
- park at least 10 metres from an intersection without traffic lights
- if there are traffic lights, park at least 20 metres away from the intersection
- park at least 20 metres behind a bus stop, or at least 10 metres in front
You can be fined if you don't follow these rules. Additionally, if your car is parked illegally your insurance company may not cover a damage or personal injury claim.
Metered Parking
Parking meters are in many of the CBD streets within Ipswich City.
Parking spaces with specified time limits are necessary to allow as many people as possible access to an area.
The meter's instructions show the times it applies, maximum parking time and coins to be used.
Metered on street parking bays have time limits according to the official traffic parking signs, some examples are:
- 1P - This sign indicates a maximum of 1 hour of parking is permitted
- 2P - This sign indicates a maximum of 2 hours of parking is permitted
- 4P - This sign indicates a maximum of 4 hours of parking is permitted
There are a number of other signs which limit parking times to as little as 2 minutes for specific areas such as school drop-off and pick-up zones and other high traffic flow areas. Care should be taken when parking in Ipswich CBD not to stay longer than the time limit indicated on the parking sign.
Types of parking meters
There are two types of parking meters:
- single: located on the front of the parking bay
- multi-bay: control up to four parking bays and are located on the footpath, central to all bays
When inserting coins into the parking meters first check which bay you are parked in by the letter on the footpath next to your vehicle, press the bay button on the meter to bring up your bay clock and insert only the acceptable coinage ($2, $1, 20 and 10 cent pieces).
Meters and Fines
- If you park in a metered space for longer than the permitted maximum, you can be fined
- even if you put more money in the meter you will need to move your car after the maximum time limit is up
- you can be given a ticket for each successive period; so if you park at a two hour meter for over four hours, you may receive two infringement notices
Faulty Meters
If the parking meter won't accept your money or is not working and cannot show how long you have been parked in that space:
- Note down the meter number (located on the back of the meter) and the parking bay letter (located on the kerb in the case of multi-bay meters).
- Phone Ipswich City Council as soon as possible on (07) 3810 6666 to report the fault.
Disabled Parking
Disabled parking is available for both current red and blue disabled permit holders issued by the Queensland Transport. Below is a map showing the locations of all disabled parking bays within the Ipswich CBD. Ipswich City Council accepts all interstate disability permits.

Care should be taken when parking in a disabled parking bay, ensure your permit is visible and on the dashboard and that the color of the permit matches the traffic disabled parking sign.
Red and blue permit holders are entitled to park at any metered bays for free for the time limit on the sign. The permit must be displayed or an infringement could be issued.
Further information regarding disabled parking can be obtained from Queensland Transport on 13 23 80.
Heavy Vehicles/Trucks
Section 200 of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Road Rules) Regulations, stopping on roads, a Heavy Vehicle or Long Vehicle (Heavy - GVM exceeding 4.5 tonnes) (Long - exceeding 7.5 meters) must not stop on a length of road in a built up area for longer than 1 hour, unless the driver is permitted to stop on the length of road for longer than 1 hour by information on or with a traffic control device.
Heavy and Long Vehicle Parking Permits
Under Local Law 6 Council will consider issuing a permit to park Heavy or Long Vehicles on land in built up areas with the following considerations:
- Government requirements
- Public interest
- Safety issues
- Amenity issues
- Any additional criteria specified in a subordinate local law
