Our Policies

Council's policies are statements of the principles and/or values that Council takes into consideration during its decision making processes. Policies are in place as they are required under legislation and provide a framework for Council to achieve outcomes that meet the needs of the community as stated in Council’s strategic direction documents such as Advance Ipswich and our Corporate Plan. All policies are made by resolution of Council in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Act 2009 (the Act). Policies are subject to regular review.

The Act states that a local government may make and enforce any local law that is necessary or convenient for the good rule of its local government area and keeps a register of local laws available on its website. Local governments can also make subordinate local laws that provide details for the implementation of the broader principles of local laws. Local laws and subordinate local laws govern most of Council's roles and responsibilities including council meetings, commercial licensing, permits, parking, animal management, local government controlled areas and roads, nuisance and community health and safety, extractive industries and vegetation management.

  • View the council policies webpage for copies of all policies.
  • View the local laws webpage for copies of all local and subordinate laws.
  • The Queensland Department of Local Government and Planning has an online Local Laws Database referencing the local and subordinate laws of all local governments in Queensland.
