Ipswich City Council and Ipswich Waste Services have partnered with the Handel Group to provide our On-Demand Large Item Kerbside Collection service.

How it works

FLEXiSKiP is a heavy duty, 2 cubic metre skip bag, big enough to fit couches, mattresses, washing machines, bikes and other large items.

To order your free, annual FLEXiSKIP bag and collection visit FLEXiSKiP or phone (07) 3130 0412, Monday to Friday between 8.00 am and 5.00 pm.

4 simple steps:

  1. set up an online account
  2. book a bag for delivery (this will be delivered within 10 days)
  3. fill the bag with your unwanted large items within 21 days from receiving your FLEXiSKiP
  4. book a collection (this will be collected within 10 days).

To ensure your bag can be collected as scheduled, please fill up your FLEXiSKiP and place it close to the street kerb, with at least 4 meters clearance from any obstructions including overhead powerlines, trees, driveways and parked cars (within the control of the resident).

The service caters for collection of large items weighing up to 165kg in total, which will accommodate a standard 400 litre fridge, 7kg washing machine, single mattress, standard push bike and more.

One free FLEXiSKiP can be ordered per eligible household each year. There are no upfront fees for this service. Credit/debit card details and a valid email address are required as part of the application process. Charges will only be applied in the event of a breach of the terms and conditions of use.

Who is eligible for the service

This annual service is free for eligible city of Ipswich residents. Most residents with a wheelie bin collection service and 4 metres of unobstructed kerb access will be eligible. Visit the FLEXiSKiP website or phone (07) 3130 0412, Monday to Friday between 8.00 am and 5.00 pm to see if your address is eligible.

You are not eligible if you:

  • live in high-rise or unit complex with an existing bulk bin service
  • are located in rural areas that do not have a kerbside waste collection service
  • live in a property which is inaccessible to the collection trucks as determined by council, this may include, kerb frontage limitations, safety concern etc.
  • are not disposing of household domestic waste from the nominated property or are undertaking a commercial enterprise.

What can be put in a FLEXiSKiP - ACCEPTABLE

  • soft flooring and mattresses
  • electronic items (cords, computers)
  • household appliances including fridges, freezers, washers, dryers and stoves
  • soft furnishings and large furniture
  • carpets and rugs
  • bath and laundry tubs
  • timber, tiles and bricks
  • bikes and sporting equipment
  • wood products
  • garden organics (lawn clippings, palm fronds, pruning)
  • mirrors and furniture containing glass
  • clean dry glass unable to go into yellow-lid recycling bin
  • concrete, bricks and tiles.

What cannot be put in a FLEXiSKiP - NON ACCEPTABLE

  • construction and demolition material (excluding concrete, bricks and tiles)
  • general household waste and recycling (including food scraps)
  • batteries or mobile phones
  • car parts including tyres
  • hazardous waste (such as gas bottles, asbestos, chemicals and fibro sheets)
  • liquids, oils, solvents and paints
  • commercial builders waste and business waste, including window panes
  • broken glass.

Where to set up your FLEXiSKiP

The FLEXiSKiP must be accessible for collection by a crane truck from the road.

Make sure your FLEXiSKiP is placed:

  • close to the street kerb (must be within 4 metres from the street kerb)
  • does not block a public footpath or the roadway
  • has no obstructions such as powerlines, trees or parked cars (within the control of the resident) that may prevent collection (must be 4 meters from any potential obstruction).

To keep our streets attractive and to prevent any unwanted use of your personal FLEXiSKiP, place your FLEXiSKiP on the kerb only when you are ready to fill it.

Ideally, your FLEXiSKiP should be on the kerbside for no longer than 2 weeks, however you must order a collection within 21 days from receiving the FLEXiSKiP. Non-compliance may result in a fee and be referred for investigation under applicable local laws.

Charges

One free FLEXiSKiP can be ordered per eligible household each year. There are no upfront fees for this service.

Credit/debit card details and a valid email address are required as part of the application process.

Charges will only be applied in the event of a breach of the terms and conditions of use. Credit card details will be removed after 90 days.

Collection not booked within 21 days of the FLEXiSKiP being delivered.

Your booked collection can't occur – this can be due to a range of issues including:

  • the skip's location is unsuitable for collection; for example, not on kerbside or too close to cars, trees and powerlines (within the control of the resident)
  • the skip is oversized
  • the skip contains non-accepted items

$50.00 for every failed collection attempt

The skip is overweighted (more than 165kg).

$0.20 for every kg of overweighted acceptable material

Contaminated items and non-accepted items is discovered in the skip after collection.

Calculated based on type and amount of items

Other important information

If you wish to cancel your order you will need to do so within 48 hours of receiving the confirmation email via email iccbulk@handel.group or phone (07) 3130 0412.

You cannot give your FLEXiSKiP to another household once it has been delivered. FLEXiSKiP uses GPS registration and the QR code on the bag will not activate a skip collection at any property other than the one it was initially delivered to. You may incur a fee if the FLEXiSKiP is moved to an alternate property.

You do not need to be home to receive your FLEXiSKiP parcel – they are dispatched with an ‘authority to leave’ approval.

We understand that residents may have difficulty moving heavy items and filling their FLEXiSKiP. We recommend residents seek assistance to lift heavy items safely.

If the two long straps of the FLEXiSKiP cannot touch each other, it could mean your FLEXiSKiP is too full, which may result in additional charges being applied.

For your and our safety, we may be unable to collect in inclement weather. Your FLEXiSKiP will be collected as soon as it is safe to do so.

Each eligible property may only be offered the service once per calendar year.

What happens to the FLEXiSKiP bags after collection?

In order to ensure the safety and durability of Flexiskips bags for large items, a strict single-use policy is enforced. Embracing the Ipswich Council’s vision for sustainability, Handel has formed a partnership with Big Bag Recovery, who responsibly recycles all used Flexiskips bags. Big Bag Recovery is the only scheme accredited by the Australian Government for the product stewardship of plastic bags capable of holding over 15 kg/l of contents, including sacks and bulk bags. By recycling Flexiskips bags, we ensure they do not end up in the ocean or landfill, but are instead transformed into reusable plastic materials.
